The challenge faced on the Washington University Project was to acoustically treat the ceiling without obscuring the view through the large glass ceiling. Newmat’s NewLight T8/Crystal membrane, with its patented micro-perforated technology, provided just the right amount of sound absorption to transform the space into a great gathering area and events room. The NewLight T8/Crystal membrane was stretched onto 245 custom-fabricated aluminum frames that were suspended approximately 6” below the glass and held in place with torsion springs. The suspended frames provided the right amount of airspace to achieve the desired acoustic results while also allowing easy removal for cleaning.
